DISPLACED STUDIOS | Vladivostock, 2007
pigment print drawing on archival paper
4.5m x 2m

This is an image of a work of handwritten text from a journey to Vladivostok, Russia. This story was initially written to me by New York based journalist and collaborator LoriAnne Van Sciver. As well as the enjoyment the story offers, the drawing considers ideas of the memories of experiences in relation to place.

Displaced Studios involves multiple activities linked by a relationship to travel and tourism, and by the fact that all work is made whilst travelling. The project is based on the premise that the traveller acts as observer, occupying a position outside the society. The significance of tourism here presents a condition of revealing aspects of normal practices which might otherwise remain opaque. In the position of the tourist even the ordinary is reflected in the light of the unfamiliar. In this way Displaced Studios becomes a model for understanding society.
